Towns that existed to mine the landscape leave behind the institutions of settlement—homes, churches, stores, hotels, post offices, schools, and saloons.



Books, websites, and maps tell their histories, and explain their functions today—galleries, movie sets, and weekend destinations full of crafts and curiosities.








In that spirit, I spent part of today photographing Golden and Cerrillos, New Mexico, and present their stories as buildings which still reflect against the landscapes which provided their reasons for being.





These are not among the fully abandoned ghost towns of New Mexico, but are layered places with stories for our eyes to ponder.
