In April, I wrote about the little things in urban life, and argued that “accoutrements rule the city.”
This time, in a visual tour of hyperlocal signs and symbols, I illustrate many aspects of American life gleaned from an unincorporated urban area not far from Portland, using “de-cyphering,” a graffiti theme illustrated above.

Here, it’s not the things, but the messaging which matters.
Look carefully, and free expression, capitalism, advertising, pets, voting rights, utilities, public safety, indigenous history, gardens and green spots play out together over a square mile area.
There’s an equation of D’s which summarizes the assembled imagery:
Observed Diversity = Deciphering by Discerning Eyes

I suggest that you try this while visiting a place to contrast reality with reputation. In addition to selfies, this is what your mobile phone camera is for.
